- Bette Midler - There are certain musical artists that appeal across different genres and attract an audience from all age groups. This is the case with Bette Midler, a singer and actress, with a long and distinguished career. Some Bette Midler songs have achieved classic status and she is known for her passionate delivery of ballads and up tempo numbers.
Her varied career has brought four Grammy awards, an Emmy and a Tony. She has also received two nominations for an Academy Award. - Elvis Presley - The word, legend is perhaps overused but no one would dispute the title, when applied to Elvis Presley. He revolutionized popular music and became an icon for millions of people. Born in a humble house in Tupelo, Mississippi to poor parents in 1935, the family later moved to Memphis. Presley had taken an interest in music at an early age and learned to play the guitar. He went to blues clubs in the city and loved what he heard.
- James Taylor - The singer songwriter boom of the 1970s owed a lot to James Taylor, an artist who has been recording and performing ever since and who has written songs that became classics. Most people can hum a James Taylor song and he has the respect of fellow musicians. His contribution was officially recognized when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.
- New York Dolls - The punk rock scene in the 1970s was kick started by the 1971 formed New York Dolls. They influenced countless acts to follow, both in America and the UK, achieving cult status but less commercial success than others who had gloried in their slipstream. They were never credited with being the best musicians in the world but fans loved their high energy music that was just right for the times. A tendency for members to cross dress added to their notoriety. In addition to self-penned songs, they enjoyed covers of classics by Bo Diddly and Sonny Boy Williamson.
- Tammy Wynette - Country music has a handful of female stars that could be described as icons and Tammy Wynette is one of them. Known as the First Lady of Country Music, she had a career as a best selling artist and was respected by her fellow performers. She wrote many songs, including the one most associated with her, Stand By Your Man. Born in 1942 in Tremont, Mississippi, she learnt to play piano and guitar as a young child and grew up listening to her favorite gospel and country singers.
- Tanita Tikaram - The greatest singer songwriters have a style all of their own and this applies to the English artist, Tanita Tikaram. Her dark, brooding looks and throaty voice have given her a cult following. The pop/folk recordings have yielded only moderate commercial success over the years but she has enjoyed critical acclaim for most of her career. She is an accomplished guitarist and writes off the wall lyrics.
